A través de los foros de Cloudy Nights descubro que José Torres, lúcido programador de CNebulaX, ha publicado un atlas de todo el cielo en PDF. La versión 1.0 de 3-ATLAS consta de 22 archivos y 661 cartas, en las que se divide la bóveda celeste. Muestra estrellas hasta la magnitud 12,6 y galaxias hasta la 15,5, y otros muchos objetos de cielo profundo (nebulosas, cúmulos, estrellas dobles, variables, etc).
Aunque aún no llega a los niveles de refinamiento del Uranometría o del Sky Atlas (los dos atlas más populares entre los astrónomos aficionados), es gratis y está en versión electrónica, por lo que podemos imprimir las cartas cada vez que las necesitemos. Y si queremos alguna zona en concreto, CNebulaX -gratuito- nos será de mucha ayuda -especialmente si disponemos de telescopio computerizado, ya que el programa es capaz de controlar un telescopio mediante el protocolo de los LX200.
Este atlas está pensado sobre todo para aficionados con experiencia. Para aprender, es mejor planisferios y guías adaptadas a las estrellas y objetos que se pueden ver a simple vista y con prismáticos. En el caso de los prismáticos, está el Sky Atlas de magnitud 7 de Andrew L. Johnson, disponible además en licencia Creative Commons.
Ayer, José subió una nueva versión del Atlas. Además, se ha publicado una ilustrativa comparativa entre el Uranometria, el Millenium y el 3-ATLAS de la zona de beta Lyr. Algo que no había aclarado en la historia es que José posee tres versiones de las cartas: Sección A (25 cartas hasta la magnitud 7), Sección B (90 cartas, hasta la magnitud 11) y Sección C (la comentada).
