La clave secreta del Universo es una novela infantil escrita por Lucy Hawking y su padre, el conocido Stephen Hawking. Se trata de un libro destinado al público joven y pretende fomentar la curiosidad por la astronomía. El protagonista es George, un niño que descubre que su vecino es científico y tiene un ordenador que le permite viajar por el Espacio. Los padres de George, en cambio, son ecologistas y son alérgicos a los avances tecnológicos. Por supuesto, no faltan los chicos malos y el científico loco.

La novela está bien escrita y creo que en general puede gustar a los chavales. Pero no tiene ni la variedad de personajes ni situaciones que Harry Potter. Los viajes que hace George por el Espacio están muy bien relatados, y ahí sí creo que pueden fomentar el interés de los lectores por la astronomía. Sin embargo, hay inconsistencias en el texto. El libro está acompañado de fichas donde se explican conceptos físicos y objetos celestes, pero no con un lenguaje adaptado al público del libro. Las fichas parecen sacadas de la Wikipedia y se utilizan tantos por ciento, decimales, cifras enormes, se citan ecuaciones (como la de E = mc2), se utilizan conceptos científicos como atracción gravitacional, etc, etc.

El momento cumbre del libro tiene por protagonista un agujero negro, donde los autores aprovechan para explicar la Radiación de Hawking (según la cual, un agujero negro puede desinflarse con el pasar del tiempo). Que alguien me explique cómo esto puede formar parte de un relato infantil:

«Según la radiación de Hawking, los agujeros negros liberan partículas muy lentamente. Por tanto, estas minúsculas fluctuaciones de espacio y tiempo dan a entender que los agujeros negros no son las trampas perfectas por las que se los tenía. La velocidad de la radiación es más lenta cuanto mayor es el agujero negro».

Es muy loable la iniciativa de involucrar a un científico conocido en la creación de un libro de divulgación destinado al público infantil y el resultado final es bastante positivo. Los niños disfrutarán de la trama, aunque tardarán algunos años en entender la información complementaria. Por lo demás, un libro entretenido a tener en cuenta si quieres un regalo didáctico para hijos o sobrinos de unos 10 años.

Con la historia del tiempo ya tuve Hawking para siempre.
