{ Tránsitos simultáneos }

El reloj del Universo está programado en escala geológica. Los eones son suspiros para los planetas y las estrellas. Así que estresarse por los 75 años que tarda el cometa P/Halley en volver cerca del Sol o los 120 años que tuvimos que esperar para ver el tránsito es inútil. Total... quizás dentro de un par de perihelios de dicho cometa quizás seamos capaces de viajar por el Sistema Solar y situar nuestras naves en el lugar adecuado para ver tránsitos y disfrutar de los cometas en vivo y en directo. Si no, siempre quedan los tránsitos de Mercurio (más habituales al estar más cerca del Sol que Venus) o los cometas que aleatoriamente se acercan a la Tierra (algunos incluso vienen a casa a saludarnos... y extinguirnos).

Bueno, que desvarío más de lo habitual. Ya saben que los aficionados a los astros andan un poco tocados de la azotea y andan perdiendo el tiempo en tonterías. A veces, incluso, son tan raritos que resulta difícil distinguir si son genios o tarados. Una de los matemáticos que más tiempo ha dedicado a calcular la mecánica de nuestro sistema es el belga Jean Meeus (la Unión Astronómica Internacional le otorgó el asteroide número 2213, que ahora lleva su nombre).

Meeus ha escrito muchos libros sobre cálculos astronómicos, muchos de ellos disponibles en la editorial Willmann-Bell (desde hace años tengo en mi biblioteca el Astronomical Algorithms). Basándose en uno de sus cálculos, Arthur C. Clarke publicó en 1971 un cuento corto (Transit of Earth) sobre un astronauta que, habiendo naufragado en Marte, pudo ver cómo la Tierra pasaba por el disco solar. Clarke, quizás embriagado por la conquista lunar, situó la escena durante el tránsito terrestre de 1984. Con un poco de suerte, los terrícolas tendrán oportunidad de ver el siguiente, en el año 2073.

Volviendo a la Tierra, ¿cuán frecuentes son los tránsitos simultáneos de Mercurio y Venus? Es la pregunta que resuelven en el último número del Journal of the British Astronomical Association J. Meeus y A. Vitagliano. El resultado es descorazonador, en los próximos 300 mil años, sólo habrán dos oportunidades.

En fín. Puestos a pedir coincidencias, me pido la supernova galáctica, de esas que brillan tanto que puedes leer de noche y que desde Kepler no vemos ninguna, aunque en teoría toca una cada 200 años (si, ya, en otras galaxias se descubren cientos al año, algunas visibles con telescopios de aficionado, pero no es lo mismo ;)

PD: La imagen que acompaña estas líneas es del tránsito de Venus y un avión. Más aún, estaba previsto que durante el tránsito se pudiera observar a la Estación Espacial Internacional pasando por delante del Sol. Un aficionado eslovaco consiguió la proeza: Sol, Venus e ISS.
