{ Los polvos excitantes de Stardust }

Los científicos de la sonda Stardust los regalos de Navidad han llegado con casi un mes de retraso, pero están como niños con zapatos nuevos tras abrir la cápsula de la sonda en el Centro Espacial Jonhson (NASA). Recordemos que hace una semana, la cápsula descendió con éxito en el desierto de Utah (EEUU), tras su encuentro con el cometa P/Wild 2 en 2004. Los científicos esperaban identificar partículas microscópicas del cometa P/Wild 2 en el aerogel, para lo cual habían solicitado la ayuda de los internautas por lo laborioso del proceso. Sin embargo, este jueves anunciaron en rueda de prensa que las partículas cometarias eran tan grandes que se pueden ver a simple vista.

Lo que a mi me tiene particularmente excitado es que han anunciado otra rueda de prensa este mismo martes para «discutir el análisis de las muestras de polvo interestelar y cometario retornado por la cápsula de Stardust». Lo primero, que me llama la atención es que ya hayan realizado algún análisis de las partículas, sospecho que realmente deben tener muchas y por tanto se han podido dar prisa en extraer alguna muestra. Lo segundo, ¿qué habrán encontrado tan pronto? Durante años se ha especulado con la posibilidad de que los cometas sean portadores interestelares de vida, y conocemos con certeza (por el análisis de la luz reflejada) que contienen compuestos de carbono. Es poco probable que en una partícula cometaria hayan encontrado nada complejo, pero espero impaciente cualquier novedad en este sentido.

Por cierto, ¿quieres ver a los científicos analizando las muestras? Estamos de suerte, porque el laboratorio tiene webcam.

PD: Acabo de darme cuenta que la página de cometas de Charles Morris ha cambiado de dirección. Veterena donde las haya, estaba ubicada en los servidores del JPL y recogía observaciones realizadas por aficionados. La nueva dirección es cometobservation.com.
